Our training groups are primarily organised by age:
- Mini (8–10 years)
- Junior (11–17 years)
- Senior (18+ years)
However, athletes may be placed in older groups based on experience or proficiency.
Training is divided into two main disciplines but there can be crossover:
- Sprint (Short upto 200m & Long 200m+)
- Middle Distance/Cross Country (MD/XC)
We aim to place athletes according to their preferred discipline and beginners will typically start in the short sprint group to build foundational skills.
Wheelchair athletes train in separate sessions, with structures tailored to their specific needs.

Our Training
We do not train just for sprinting - athletes (especially Minis & Juniors) are encouraged to try multiple disciplines across track and field events. Athletes are sometimes split into smaller groups to work on specific track or field events.
In the Winter we focus on Cross-Country. Most training is on the track although we do have occasional off-track sessions designed to build up fitness and endurance to prepare athletes for competing in the Essex Cross-Country League.

Training Sessions
Harlow WCR sessions take place twice a week at the track on a Monday and a Wednesday. Sessions are tailored to individual needs, events and competition schedules. Within the racing squad, there are multi event, sprinters and endurance athletes. The Wednesday session is currently invitational only, this will be discussed with the Head Coach after trials and performances.
